What is "Tales From the Nickel"?

"Tales From the Nickel" is my very first self-produced, evening length dance production. This means that from the concept to the choreography to the music and costume choices, it's all my doing. I have shown individual choreographic works here and there over the years, but not enough for the larger dance community to really know who I am, SO I figured my first show should tell people who I am and in order to understand this, you have to know where I come from. The "Nickel" is what the 5th ward area of Houston, Texas is also known as and I will be telling you true tales specifically from my teenage years living in this area.

The stories are all written by me and range from funny to horrific. These stories are told through the use of several dance styles including modern, jazz, hiphop and contemporary. The music is what I heard during the 1980s when I was the only white teenager living in an all African American neighborhood. This includes rap and hiphop, soul and RnB, and gospel music. My mom was from Washington D.C. and listened to mostly big band music, so there was an interesting contrast INSIDE our run down little apartment 24/7 of Glenn Miller, the Andrews Sisters and such. The show includes this music as well as video and text to help you understand everything you see in the choreography.

Tales From the Nickel premieres September 18 & 19, 2015 at The Barn Performance Space, Downtown Houston. Use the links above to find out more about me and the dancers, see photos of the journey, and get ticket information.
